PCT Q&A

I’ve got many questions from firends when I told them about my plan to hike the PCT. Many and frequent questions, so I thought to give you a little Question and Answer of the most frequent questions 😉

Q: How long is the trail?
A: Its about 2600miles / 4200km long.

Q: Are you hiking alone?
A: Since I want to be for myself, yes I’m hiking alone. But, there are many hikers (approx. 400/year) also hiking the PCT so im also looking forward to meet new people.

Q: How long will it take to hike?
A: In general, hiker need 4-6 month. It depends on how you plan your hike. Walking speed, hours of hiking per day and also how many days off you take. My actual plan is to hike 4,8 month (±10 days) because my VISA is for 6 month and I want to have some time after the hike to visit friends.

Q: And what about all the food?
A: There are post offices where I will pickup prepared food boxes or I resupply at towns which are close to the trail. Important is to carry food which has a high cal/weight ratio.

Q: But you will have enough water right?
A: Well, you are in the nature so the only water resource are springs, rivers or lakes. It’s useful to carry water purification with you. I will use water treatment drops which clean your water from virus and bacteria.

Q: How do you know you are still on the trail?
A: I will print maps and carry my cell phone. There is for example a PCT App where you can check you location.

Q: Are there bears?
A: Yes, there are bears. “Only” black bears and no grizzlies but I have still do some preparation. In the high sierra e.g. is it necessary to put you food in a bear vault. Also you shouldn’t sleep where you cook you dinner.

Q: How do you know you are still on the trail?
A: I will print maps and carry my cell phone. There is for example a PCT App where you can check you location.

Q: Are you nuts?
A: Haha, sure you have to be a bit crazy. But let me try to bring it to you with a quote from John Muir:

“In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks”
